Clean that grip

I've seen and hear a lot of tips about cleaning and maintaining rod grips. As for me, I can be quite lazy and usually look for the simplest solution. The method I use to keep my grips looking good is just wiping it down with some Clorox bleach. I just take a piece of paper towel, dampen it with some bleach and start wiping my grip. I then rinse it off and and let it dry. Viola! Nice clean rejuvenated grip. No need for me to go out and buy any unnecessary things, and not much of a hassle.

Save those used flies

Give those worn out flies a longer life. Instead of tossing those beaten flies away after a trip, bring them back to life with a good steam treatment. It will sure save you some time on the vise and money. All you need is some spare time, a stove, and a kettle with water. Doesn't get much easier than that. Just hold your fly in the steam from the spout, though be careful not to get it too close or too hot as it could damage the fly. Here I used a simple BWO for an example. As you can see the hackle was a bit worn and could use a good straightening. A quick steam treatment and a nice hot cup of tea after, and I am very satisfied with the results.

Candice the caddisfly, a plush doll creation by the Weird Bug Lady. Not the typical doll, but oddly enough I wish I had one. Who wouldn't want a cased caddis plushie? This girl sure is talented. Check out some of her other creations on her website at www.weirdbuglady.com. I may just have to keep an eye out for future insect creations.

Stumbled across this company today and was quite intrigued. Mad Water offers water proof packs. They offer a chest pack for fisherman, but also have a water proof waist pack that I could see myself being very comfortable with on the streams. Check them out at www.madwater.com.

PETA Kills Huh?

So the other day while exiting Trader Joe's, I was approached by a member of the Greenpeace organization. I must surely have written on my forehead "come waste my time." I'll say this girl was relentless. She did not let me go once I answered a single question "do you care for the environment?" How else am I, as an avid fly fisherman with love for nature, suppose to answer otherwise? Anyhow, this girl sure could sell. If I were her I'd get a sales job and make the money to contribute that way. I could just picture her on the phone annoying the heck out of me as a telemarketer, and getting me to dish out $40-50 for junk I could do with out.

So recalling the encounter with the relentless girl, I recalled another infamous group P.E.T.A. So I figured I would check in to see what silly things they have been stirring up lately. Low and behold I come across this photo below. Heck I know her, she's that now famous movie star that I went to school with. For an extremist group I am not fond of, I sure can't deny their advertisement. I wonder if any of the beautiful women that P.E.T.A. finds for these types of advertisement and some interesting protests, understands that P.E.T.A. has killed animals, and are totally just a bunch of silly contradicting extremist with nothing better to do but cry and moan and disrupt our days with annoying protests.

JAWS on the Fly!!!

So I just heard a few days ago that the first great white shark was caught on a fly off La Jolla. Trip so happened to be captained by non other than Conway Bowman. Well that's no surprise, He's a sharking guru. Jaws (as I'll now refer to it) was caught by Jeff Paterson Director of Sales for Abel Automatics, while testing some company hardware. Sure wish I had a job like that. He caught Jaws on a Scott 15WT rod matched with an Abel Super 13 reel lined with 380yrds of gelspun backing and RIO Leviathan 550 grain line. Now thats some serious tools. Jaws measure up about 6ft. long and about 150lbs. I bet that made for an amazing fight. Be sure to check out Bowman Bluewater Guides & Outfitters LLC.

Finally an Abel Reel that really catches my eye

I'm definitely going to have to add this to the list of reels to own. I'll say it'll have to be right up there next to a custom Ari 't Hart reel. Would I fish it though. hm... Probably not. I think I'd keep it in a case under one of his paintings. It sure is nice to have a huge wish list. Check out Derek DeYoung's website for more of his amazing work.
